Safe CCTV camera passwords (don’t get your IP camera hacked)

Installing IP CCTV cameras and not worrying about passwords, is the same as locking your house main door but leaving the windows open.

In fact we have to worry about all aspects of security, and when we install devices such as cameras, DVRs and NVRS, there is the possibility of having hackers attacks via network.

You must protect your system by using the best VPNs and strong passwords that can keep the hacker away. It's important to take the necessary steps to have a safe network.

The most common way of attack is the attempt to log in with username and password, so it's better using safe CCTV camera passwords to avoid your security camera to get hacked.

Imagine a  situation, where your are visiting a company that has a Wi-Fi hotspot available, you can simply connect to the network and search to see if there is any IP camera or recorder available on the network.

If you find a security camera, you can simply try to log in with the default username and password. And this information is easily found on the Internet.

Using the default password

Most people do not change the default installation password for cameras in homes and small businesses, which is why they suffer a large number of intrusions because the product manuals tell you the initial password

Let's now imagine another scenario where people with a basic computer network knowledge search the Internet for connected IP cameras, DVRs or NVRs, When they find such equipment, there is a great probability of logging in successfully simply by trying the default password from the manufacturer.

A more sophisticated form of attack

There are people with higher knowledge that can hack the cameras and recorders that are online even when the default username and password has been changed, one of the simple ways of  attack is to send a quick sequence of combinations of passwords.

A computer can try hundreds or even thousands of combinations per minute depending on the system.

This combination is called a brute-force attack and is most often based on common words that are in a dictionary

Of course, there are even more sophisticated forms of attacks that require deeper knowledge, but also higher security protections ranging from creating strong passwords to using VPNs, Capchas, and OTPs

In this article we will illustrate at least one way to improve security by using stronger passwords with combinations that prevent brute-force attack through dictionary use.

Tips for a safer password

In this article we will illustrate at least one way to improve security by using stronger passwords with combinations that prevent brute-force attack through dictionary use.

  • Password must be at least 8 characters
  • Must have a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols
  • Avoid a sequence like 1,2,3,4 or abcd
  • It should not be a dictionary-based word
  • Should not be based on birthday dates

To not complicate our life with password that are impossible to remember, we can memorize a phrase that is the basis of our passwords and use the letters and combinations of numbers and symbols.

For example of the phrase: "I like to learn new technologies and make more money" we created the password: Iltlntamm$ taken from the beginning of the sentence with the first letter in a capital letter and at the end a symbol representing the money.

Be creative, make up a phrase and create your secure password!
