Sometimes is necessary to send the signals from your IP cameras to a recorder or central station located far away and that's where you can use a wireless bridge for security cameras.
Wi-fi radios and wireless bridge for security cameras are very common on outdoor projects where is too hard to pull cables.
It's possible to power up the IP camera using a PoE (Power over Ethernet) device such as a power injector or PoE switch as shown in the previous picture.
The switch can be connected to a radio transmitter to send the video signals to a receiver which is also connected to a switch that leads to computers or recorders.
If the wireless radios are configured to work in "bridge mode" they will simply connect both ends as if a UTP (network cable) was used between the switches.
Most of the professional wireless radios have the bridge mode available, so make sure you buy a model that allows such a configuration.
See below an example of the Ubiquity Nano Station wireless radio which has the Transparent Bridge Mode, you just need to check the enable box. Very easy, right?
You can find this model on Amazon, usually for less than $200.
The manufacturer claims the radio can reach up to 10Km with up to 25Mbps which is enough for most applications since an IP camera uses around 2.5 Mbps when transmitting video with Full HD resolution at 30 FPS (using H.264 CODEC).
Of course, this is just an estimate and some variables such as interference, field of view, obstacles and Fresnel zone must be considered during the installation.
Believe me, you don't need to worry too much about the technical terms when using a simple pair of wireless radios such as the one mentioned here since it's designed for easy installation and comes ready to work on bridge mode.
Anyway, it's important to learn as much as possible about wireless transmission before starting an outdoor surveillance project.
