What is Power Over Coax (PoC) for CCTV

Power over Coax for CCTV cameras

Do you know you can power up your security camera by using Power Over Coax (PoC) without the need to use extra cables?

This is the solution that many installers were expecting. Just connect a single cable to the camera and you are done. Video, PTZ commands and power sent over coaxial cable makes the installation faster and cheaper.

In this article I'm going to talk about this power over coax standard created to power security cameras using coaxial cables. So get ready to learn...

Power over Coax

You will find the acronym PoC (Power Over Coax) in different catalogs of high resolution analog security cameras with HDTVI, HDCVI and AHD technology.

How to power the camera over coaxial cable?

This is very simple, just use a DVR and a camera that are compliant with the Power Over Coax standard. Connect the cables and CCTV cameras to the DVR just the way you use to do in your regular CCTV installation.

This technology is not new, but is not being used by most installers yet, some are unaware of its existence and others just don't want to learn about new technologies and leave the traditional system behind.

I believe that in the future this will be the most used method to install high-resolution analog security cameras, just as PoE is the most used method to power IP cameras. Learn more in the article: PoE switch for IP cameras.

Manufacturers that have PoC Technology

Hikvision, Dahua, Lilin and Webgate are some of the manufacturers that have technology to power CCTV camera over coaxial cable.

As manufacturers are licensing the use of the technology to other companies, it is likely that you will find other brands distributing PoC-powered cameras.

You can buy PoC camera with HDTVI, HDCVI, AHD or HDSDI technologies, all different manufacturers are already using this standard.

Conclusion about PoC Technology

The technology to power CCTV cameras over coaxial cable will surely grow in the coming years. At this time there is no universal standard and each manufacturer is developing a proprietary technology.

Anyway it's easier and faster to work with PoC to power up the cameras.
